This might come as a shock, but there is a Spongebob Squarepants musical making its way to New York’s famous Broadway theatre district. But the best part? One of the tracks in the new musical was written by none other than Panic! At The Disco’s Brendon Urie.

The musical, entitled Spongebob Squarepants – The New Musical, made its debut in Chicago last year, but is set to hit up New York City this December.

The full cast recording is set for release on September 22nd, and features contributions from a huge number of big-name artists, including Aerosmith, The Flaming Lips, They Might Be Giants, John Legend, and more.

But one of the jewels in the recording’s crown is the track ‘(Just A) Simple Sponge’, which was written by Brendon Urie. Clearly taking a cue from his recent history as part of the cast for Kinky Boots, the track is exactly as you’d expect a song from a Spongebob Squarepants musical sound, and it’s brilliant.

PopBuzz shared a recording of Urie giving us a sneak peek at the track last year, but in the meantime, there’s a full recording of the track as performed by Ethan Slater below.
